General Behavior Expectations

The following behavior expectations have been developed as general guidelines for student conduct. Individual classroom teachers, cooks, bus drivers, etc. reserve the right to establish more specific rules for behavior.

Classroom

  • Respect people and property
  • Come to class prepared with required materials, supplies, and homework
  • Use appropriate language and indoor voice
  • Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself
  • Leave the classroom with expressed permission only
  • Bullying, teasing, and fighting will not be tolerated.

Cafeteria

  • Respect people and property
  • Use appropriate language and indoor voice
  • Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself
  • Walk at all times – absolutely no running in the cafeteria
  • Be courteous with others, no cutting lines.
  • Use appropriate table manners: use utensils appropriately, chew with your mouth closed, no loud burping, and do not play with or be wasteful of food
  • Keep food on trays
  • Clean up spills immediately and leave your area clean and free from trash
  • Remain seated with your tray until dismissed
  • Return and stack tray properly at wash window

School Bus

  • Respect people and property
  • Use appropriate language and indoor voice, loud talking or yelling are distracting to the driver.
  • Drivers are authorized to stop buses at designated stops only, unless otherwise directed
  • When the bus is in motion, students must remain seated, no moving around in the bus, and no part of their body should be outside the bus
  • Students can only open and close windows with permission from the driver
  • No eating or drinking on the bus (exceptions may include sack lunches prepared for field trips) but any food or drink consumption in the bus requires expressed permission from the driver or faculty chaperones
  • Chewing gum and flower seeds are prohibited on the school bus.
  • Keep the bus clean
  • Bus Driver reserves the right to assign seats
  • Pets or animals are not allowed on the bus
  • No pushing, shoving, or fighting
  • Take all your personal belongings when you exit the bus
  • Students will be held responsible for any damages to bus caused by negligence or vandalism
  • Students may lose bus riding privileges for violating rules and regulations

Halls/Passageways

  • Respect people and property
  • Walk at all times
  • Use appropriate language
  • Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself
  • Students must have expressed permission to leave during regular class time

Playground

  • Respect people and property
  • Use appropriate language
  • Students may be in designated play areas during approved and scheduled periods for recess and breaks
  • Play in a friendly manner. Roughhousing is prohibited
  • Be courteous to others, share the playground equipment
  • Use equipment appropriately and safely (no running up the slides or twisting and jumping off swings)
  • Do not throw objects (for example rocks, gravel, wood chips, sand, snowballs, etc.)
  • No defacing of property or damaging equipment

Restrooms

  • Respect people and property
  • Students must have expressed permission to go to the restroom. Teachers are encouraged to limit restroom passes to individuals and not multiple students or groups.
  • Limit your time in the restroom
  • Use proper restroom etiquette: flush the toilet/urinal, wash hands with soap and water, turn off the faucet after use, and throw paper towels in the trash can
  • Respect people’s privacy

Assemblies

  • Respect people and property
  • Enter and exit in an orderly fashion
  • Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself
  • Sit in designated areas
  • Listen attentively to guest speakers and respond politely when called upon
  • Remain seated until you are dismissed

Field Trips & Extracurricular Activities

  • Respect people and property
  • Students must be in good academic and disciplinary standing in order to participate in field trips and extracurricular activities
  • Students must obtain written permission to participate in field trips and extracurricular activities
  • Adhere to established rules on the bus and rules of the
  • Always remain with assigned chaperones and group
  • Remember that you represent Ohkay Owingeh Community School, Ohkay Owingeh, and your family. Conduct yourself in a respectful manner at all times.
  • Failure to abide by rules and regulations may result in calling parents to come pick up their child.

Health, Safety, and Emergency Situations

  • Respect people and property
  • Remain calm and follow directions by school personnel
  • During a fire drill or actual fire, follow procedures as explained by the teacher and practiced:

    Student safety and wellbeing are the number one priority
    Follow evacuation routes in a calm and orderly fashion
    Walk, do not run
    Assist others if necessary
    Follow evacuation routes to designated areas and remain in the designated area until directed otherwise
    Be aware of your surroundings and your classmates, tell an adult if you notice that someone is missing
    Help the teacher in taking a head-count/roll call if asked to do so

  • Follow all instructions during a lockdown.

    Remain in the classroom or designated area (cafeteria/front office, etc.)
    If you are in the playground, hallway or parking lot, please move calmly and quickly to a safe roomn
    Follow all instructions by school personnel and remain calm.

  • Follow all instructions during a shelter-in-place

    Movement within the building may be permitted under some circumstances
    Bathroom needs can be attended to, under supervision
    If you are in the playground, hallway or parking lot, please move calmly and quickly to a safe room
